There are always the “bad apples” even with taxi drivers. Twice have entered taxis at Coral on Las Americas and had taxi drivers refuse to turn their meters on with excuses and then insisted on 50 cents more upon arriving at my destination than ones with meters charged previously. Sad but it happens. Have had locals tell me they cheat their own…[Read more]

Todd, also tipping taxi drivers is really not appropriate. The local people commonly do not have extra money and this can lead to expectations or even demands on the part of taxi drivers and others. Learn what the locals tip. Ask and tip appropriately in all situations. We are not here to change the culture but to embrace and appreciate it, after all.

A great article that covered all the important parts of being successful as an Expat. Main thing I find is just “not sweating the small stuff” is essential so just take things as they come and rejoice in the new experiences rather than wanting things to be what you left behind in your home country. I’m literally “not in Kansas anymore” and…[Read more]

Sadly, have been here three years and my Spanish is still limited as am spoiled with my landlord who lives in the same house and is my driver, translator, assistance, and my “son from another mother” in every way. So have to push myself to learn more as this is my home of choice now and it is frustrating not to speak more Spanish; meantime, my…[Read more]

Truly, I find this one of the best articles I’ve ever read on Gringo Tree. Like to see more like this.

An excellent article and so true. Good to perceive our placements and giving with how ones around us see us. I applaud this author and his insights. And pushes me even further to work on learning to speak Spanish well here since this is my now chosen home country and as in the USA ones need to learn to speak English to navigate well, it is true…[Read more]

I buy the coffee grown in Loja, downtown, and they grind it for my perculator I brought from the US and have two beans, one stronger flavored than the other. I don’t find it that expensive at $4 a bag and get several and freeze them for future use saving frequent trips. Happy to understand why the instant coffee is available in the stores all…[Read more]

I spent three years deciding on and planning my retirement to Cuenca. International Living was a big support as was their contact person here and had a one week visit here, with a couple of friends, ad my contact helped me secure a local attorney and a reliable shipper with man years of experience. Stayed at a B&B run by an American resident who…[Read more]

Only thing I miss are spices like chili powder, allspice ,good sour cream and cream cheese and vitamin selections such as fenugreek that I use for balancing blood sugar, and a few others; however, all necessities are here and the good people here make up for ones who are thieves and material things not found. Country is lovely, freedoms are great…[Read more]

With 11 American Indian tribal languages still spoken here in Ecuador and since I have Cherokee and Apache ancestry cannot help but imagine my ancestors traveled north from here.

Roxi, don’t give up on any of us as most would love meeting you and others who like to share your amazing culture and language. There are rude people in every nationality, sadly so please don’t judge us all by a few “bad apples” as we refer to them. I too find some Expats not approachable or abrupt or angry in nature but love the ones who are…[Read more]
